"UMBRELLA GIRL" by British-based graffiti artist Banksy.
All of the New Orleans artworks by Banksy are fiercely guarded and 'Umbrella Girl' is no different. As of early 2014 'Umbrella Girl' has been covered with plyboard and has a guard round the clock following an attempt to cut the art work out of the wall.
There is a depressing feel to this work. In an interview, Banksy said that this stencil represents how things that are supposed to protect us can also hurt us. The girl is standing under the umbrella, a portable roof, but is getting rained on regardless.
Rain falls from the umbrella like spaghetti, but it is raining under the umbrella, not over the top. The umbrella should be protecting her from the rain, but it is instead its source. She is holding out her hand to see if it is like that outside the umbrella.
