Fitness junkies live by the credo “no pain, no gain,” we on the other hand, believe strongly in “fashion before function.” At ModernLook, we’re always searching for the latest trends in design. So you can only imagine our excitement when we came across one of Canada’s emerging accessories design group, Baffi, and fell in love with their use of wood in menswear.
We caught up with our new bffs at Baffi, Ayman and Michael, to get the inside scoop on their creative process and quite simply… why wood?
Modern Look: We are obsessed with the wooden pocket squares! What in the world possessed you guys to come up with this?
Baffi: We are both best friends inside and outside the office; so like most great ideas, it came about over a couple of beers. We were thinking of cool new things to put on a men’s blog we were working on, and all of a sudden Michael says “we need crazy things like wooden pocket squares”, and a light bulb went off in both our heads. The rest is history. Plus it really helped that Michael wouldn’t even touch, let alone wear a pocket square unless he never had to fold one again!
Modern Look: We totally agree with Michael, and can’t be the only ones… So you must get a ton of special requests, right? What’s the wildest custom design you’ve made for a client?
Baffi: That would have to be for a gentleman in Dubai. He came across our stuff, fell in love and ordered 18k gold embedded pocket squares for him and his groomsmen.
Modern Look: Whoa, 18k gold?!?! Who is this mystery man?
Baffi: Sorry guys, he must remain nameless. LOL
Modern Look: Fine. He appears to be taken anyway… Well then tell us about the other accessories you guys are working on.
Baffi: What we are really excited about are the new shapes and textures coming out this spring for the wooden pocket squares. We’ll be utilizing shapes such as triangles, circles and all sorts of folds as well as incorporating different fabrics on the wood. Joining the pocket square will be wooden cufflinks along with a wooden valet tray. The initial reaction has been off the charts! Look out for these mid-summer 2015.
Modern Look: Being a Canadian based company, in your opinion what do you think Canadians have done better than the rest in design/fashion?
Baffi: In general, Canadians don’t care if you like it or if you don’t. That’s what we love about being in the Canadian fashion world. We design and create with passion and pride ourselves in people’s reactions to our unique lines.
Modern Look: Fair enough… but what about Canadian tuxedos?
Baffi: No comment. LOL
Modern Look: It appears your accessories are made for the “suit wearing man”. Is this the case? And if so, do you wear a suit daily?
Baffi: We wouldn’t say that we wear a “suit” every day; however it will be a cold day in hell before you catch one of us without a blazer! We like to mix and match nowadays – chinos with a blazer, sometimes with a shirt and tie and these days we’re really into wearing vests and playing around with contrasting colors between vest, blazers, accessories and of course our pocket squares.
Modern Look: We love your brand name and concept, paying homage to Salvador Dali’s moustache and his ability to set himself apart from the rest. What would you say makes you, on a personal level, stand out from the crowd?
Baffi: As a team we have a very interesting dynamic. Both of us have different personalities, so we have the ability to wrap our heads around a lot of different challenges and tackle anything that presents itself. Being able to utilize both our skills in our everyday life as well as our business lives really sets us apart. It is always important to have that person on the other side with a fresh perspective and give insight on a completely different way to look at a situation.
Modern Look: Sounds like you guys have a healthy bromance.
Baffi: Well we do have a fondness for each other along with mutual respect and admiration towards our individual creative process.
There you have it – wood is good. Hop over to Baffi’s site and check out their innovative wares. Trust us, it’s worth the trip and a passport isn’t necessary.
